At long last, (touch wood!) my music PC seems to be working.

On opening the machine and moving all the IDE cables out of the way, I discovered I had board revision 1.0U.  I found the relevant file, installed it, crossed my fingers and rebooted.  The problem with the ATA100 IDE card has gone away, and I now have all drives working perfectly.  I am now able to burn CDs again, and proved it by burning a compilation CD (since I have to make one for Wigan).  I am also now able to burn DVDs, which is going to make backing up all the songs I have in progress on the 2nd hard drive a lot easier.

For the technically-minded, I now have a 2600 Mhz AMD machine, with 512Mb memory, using the old Soundblaster live soundcard (no point in changing to a better sound card just yet, I\'ll finish the 2nd album first).  The computer contains two 20Gb Hard drives, one as system, one for recording, and a CDROM and a DVD +- burner.  All drives are master drives, each on a separate IDE channel to prevent bus contention slowing anything down.  Graphics are provided by the old NVIDIA used in the previous 300mhz machine, and run at 1280x1180.  I want as big a screen as possible when editing waves and working on multitracks.

Software remains the same, Cooledit pro, only upgraded to 2.0.  Again, no point in changing horses half-way through a race.
