I was reading something last night about the fact that the Ancient Romans actually recognised Tourettes Syndrome.  Of course, they didn't call it Tourettes, and rather than putting it down to psychological problems, they believed that any one who had Tourettes had been cursed by the god Quirinus, and they were therefore cast out, and sent to live in a far-flung colony.

Nowadays, it's known as Berlin.
